Those who we constantly look-up to, and look to for advice and ideas. Of course, I'm speaking of the mentors.

Wade Roach

Hello, I’m Wade Roach.  I am a computer science teacher at Dimond High School.  I am also on the board of directors for AREA, the Alaska Robotics Education Association.  This is my 8th year mentoring the FIRST competition and I just love it.  I am married to Heather, who graciously puts up with being a robotics widow for the 6 weeks each year that we work on building the robot.  I have two boys, Iain and Orion, both have been to robotics competitions and participate in Lego League.  Orion was just one year old when he went to Nationals in Orlando in 2001.  Almost everything I do at the high school happened because of the FIRST robotics program.

I'm Chris Curry, a mentor for 568. For the first 3 years, we built the bots in my garage. It was a blast. Now the team members have much easier access, so that's a good thing. I'm so pleased to work with these kids. It gives me faith in the human race to see their good work. I feel that (even though its hard to remember) it is not about the bot, but the experiences they are getting are a part of what we will need in the future.

I was born and raised in Detroit and attended Michigan State University, Wayne State University, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the University of Alaska Anchorage.  I have a bachelor’s degree and two masters degrees.  I have worked in molecular biology research at the Michigan Cancer Foundation in Detroit and have done molecular biology research at UAF. After teaching at UAA, I went on to work as a chemist for the state of Alaska.  I have also worked on the Slope as a chemist.  In 1992, I took a teaching job at Dimond high school in Anchorage, Alaska, where I have been employed since.  I enjoy reading and robotics as well as fishing and other outdoor sports.  I am a past president of the Knik Canoers and Kayakers, the largest whitewater sports boat club in the state.  Along with Wade Roach, I am one of the original founders of the science club here at Dimond.

I was captain of the 2006 and 2007 team. I'm now attending the University of Alaska Anchorage, and participating as a mentor for the 2008 team.  I plan to transfer to the University of Washington, Seattle in the fall and intend to receive a MS in Bioengineering and apply to medical school afterward. Also, between school and work, I have little time for robotics, but still manage to squeeze it into my schedule.
